I just bought a 1996 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 and sometimes when I put it into reverse it makes a grinding noise and the car won't move so I have to put it in neutral and push it. Do I need a new transmission or is it something else? Also would it be an expansive fix?

if all of the forward gears are ok then you have a trans problem. that car is an all wheel drive thing which makes any transmission work an expensive fix. if not still not cheap as a rebuild is likely in order. generally about 1500 to 2000 dollars in my experience
