the car starts with several turn overs however once you shift into drive it shuts off. I know it could be several things but money is an issue and I have the ability and knowledge to do this on my own however I'd just like to know the easiest place to start checking to see what's broke.

I would just start by adjusting the idle so it is higher and see if it still does it. Easy and free.
