1996 Mercury Villager Does Speedometer Work Intermittently This New Car Had Lot

Why does the speedometer work intermittently?
This is a new car for us so we haven't had a lot of time to observe but noticed immediately that the speedometer will be functioning and then just drop off to zero while you are still moving at the speed it is reading. Is this a sign of a larger electrical problem?

scan for codes first it may be a bad vehicle speed sensor or a shorted wire going to it
