MY 96 mercury villager switches between drive and reverse by itself. Any ideas?

It has been driving fine lately but then one day sitting in traffic it started switching between drive and reverse by itself. At first I thought it might be because of all the traffic but I tried to drive it the next day and it didn't want to switch at all. Can you help me.
