why do my catalytic converter gets cherry red hot

either late timing or you have a missfire that is pouring fuel into the cat.

To much fuel getting dumped in to the cat is a shore way to wipe out the cat. You must find the reason fore the rich running problem or you will need a cat . There not cheap.
