How can I resolve a coolant leak that occurs when I remove the radiator cap?

I have a 1996 Mercedes S320 with a coolant leak. It leaks when I remove the radiator cap and stops after it's replaced. It appears to be leaking between the block and a unit mounted to the block just below the water pump. Can you tell me what that unit is and how I can resolve the problem?

The only thing I can think of below the water pump is the oil pan. The water pump has a weep hole on the bottom. This is probably where the leak is coming from. A small amount of seepage is normal, but when the pump begins to fail, it will begin to leak.

The owner manual has a huge amount of information in it. Especially about certain systems unique to your vehicle.
