making knocking sound on side of engine

1996 mazda 626 - Where two belts are. just started making knocking sound on side of engine where belts are.its pretty loud.

Remove the belts and start the engine to see if the noise stops. NOTE: DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT THE BELTS FOR MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS. ONLY LONG ENOUGH TO SEE IF THE NOISE IS GONE. If the noise is gone, then check the belt driven accessories.
