While changing water pump I thought I had all marks lined up. I reread everything and in short I had to turn both cams and crank to get everything to line up. Car /truck has been sitting for 2 mos and lifters have always been noisy. I started it without radiator and accessories. It caught right away sounded strong but seems clattery noisy. Do I need to pull the VC on left side and make sure I am set right? Or with as quick as it caught do you think it is just the lifters building up pressure? Or 3 is the damage already done?

If the timing is wrong as little as a 1/4 of a revolution of the engine will cause damage, pull the rocker covers and re check the timing marks first, if they are correct it may be that the lifters are the problem.
