I have a 1996 GMC sierra SL 5.0 automatic. 1st issue: The Gear indicator shows an incorrect position for all gears except for Park. While in reverse it will show no lights, in neutral it shows R, in OD it shows N, and so on. Also it won't go all the way into 1st gear, stops at second (showing 3). I assumed it was the linkage so I crawled under it and unhooked the shift cable from the transmission. While unhooked I manually switched the gears on the trany, had no problems going through all the gears. So i went to work on the shift cable, I could move the gear shift lever on the dash by pushing/pulling the shift cable, but....the lights on the gear indicator wouldn't change. So I went back to the trany and switched the gears manually again, and sure enough the gear lights changed...but it's still showing incorrect positions on the gear indicator (without the shift cable attached to the trany.) Which brings me to issue 2: Seems like it's starting in second gear. I can hit gas while in reverse and roast the tires and its a snappy tack off, but in Drive on the other hand....it's sluggish on take off, Engine doesn't appear to bog at all, but at about 20-25 mph it starts to perk up. I'm wondering if this "electrical" device thats located right next to the shift cable on the tranny has something to do with it, the wires on it appear to be following the shift cable up from what i can see. I'm thinking the cable could do with some tinkering but it still won't fix the gear shift indicator. Any help would be great, An thanks in advance. =)
