What is causing my odometer to stop working while my speedometer is working fine?

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus LX SW with a 3L DOC engine. My odometer and trip meter stopped working but my Speedometer is working fine. The VSS was replaced about a year ago. If it was a bad VSS why would the speedometer still be working? The Odometer readout is the old roll-over type associated with the old cable type of odometer. What is wrong and how do I repair?

because there is a little gear inside the speedo that makes the odometer work. it works seperate from the speedo. the cluster has to be removed and the odometer repaired. Tehre are shops that specialize in speedo repair.
