1996 Ford Fairmont Problem with gear change

The cannot change gears. If has started moving it just rev as I hit the accelerator without changing gears as the car is automatic. I need to know what is the problem.

Transmissions are difficult to diagnose long distance. It sounds like theres a mechanical problem if its stuck in first gear. If you can take the trans pan off and check for metal in it. Theres major damage if you find thick black or glittery stuff or chunks
