It's almost impossible for something in the car to destroy a generator. By their very nature, they are incapable of producing much more than their design current. What you need to start with is an autopsy to find out what is failing. Have you seen the "Ground here to test" terminal on the back of the voltage regulator? If you ground that point while the engine is idling, it should charge wide open. If it does, the car's wiring is ok and the regulator has failed. If it doesn't charge, check for the presence of 12 volts on the yellow wire. If it is missing, look for a loose or corroded 15 amp fuse, (normally I'd say "blown fuse" but that won't cause an intermittent problem).
Also check for about 2.0 volts on the green / red wire. If it is 0 volts, you will also find the dash warning lamp is off. There is a break in that circuit. If the warning lamp is on, that circuit is working.
