I put a new battery and alternator ion car. 4.3l. And I have to jump start it every time I want to use it

So is the assumption the new generator isn't charging the battery or is there a drain on it? How long does it sit between when you parked it and when you want to use it again, hours, days, or weeks? Does the battery light on the dash work?
