Problem Solved! First of all the location of the speed sensor given to me by the Parts Store was WRONG! It's located on the BACK of the transaxle on the opposite side of the car. Passenger side. Not the front of the car on the driver's side as the parts store told me. I couldn't find the location in my manual, but a post on the Haynes Manual message board steered me in the right direction. The sensor attaches to the top side of a unit that from the bottom of the car I could not see the top side. When I felt around for the wires going to the sensor, I noticed the top was loose, not only loose but missing a bolt leaving a gap of almost a half inch on one side. I removed the cap, and found the shaft located inside was not even it's correct position, the inside of the cap has a round guide that fits inside that end of the shaft. I got two replacement bolts of the correct size, made sure everything lined up so the cap slid on and sealed properly. Started the car and as soon as I moved forward the speedometer was working once again. A quick test drive shows the speedometer working and the car is shifting properly again.
Saturntech9 I still appreciated your help as at least I didn't feel abandoned with this head scratcher.
