I read that when a car reaches 100,000 miles, you should replace the water pump. I don't have any problems yet but if I sit in heavy traffic in warmer weather, the gauge moves up towards hot.

The replacement of the water pump is going to be determined by the failure of the pump and not so much its age. The age and mileage of the car would tend to make me think the radiator is getting some cold spots in it and it might be a good idea to have it inspected and perhaps consider its replacement if said cold spots do exist.
