Engine starts then shuts off

my 1996 buick riviera starts then stops then I have to wait a couple minutes to start back up can you tell me why does this happen

Hello,

This could be due to a faulty crank position sensor.
Heat is probably making the sensor to stop working and triggering the shutdown. As you wait the sensor cools down and you are able to start it.

This can sometimes trigger the check engine light. Is your check engine light illuminated?
If so, get it scanned for codes, as it can help with the diagnostics.
