1996 Buick Lesabre Replaced Brake Booster Get Rod Mount On Pedal Starts Slide

Have replaced brake booster. Can get rod to mount on brake pedal. It starts to slide on but stops when it gets to the place that clip holds it on. Any suggestions ?

loosen the mounting bolts for the booster and give it some play to slide it on
