1996 BMW Z3 starter solenoid

I can start the car manually but it will start on its own what powers the starter solenoid it doesn't seem to be receiving a connection. What could be the problem thank you for your help I really appreciate it

If the starter isn't engaging, have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. If there is power (should be 12v) then chances are the starter is bad. If there is no power, check the starter relay.
