during routine emissions test the computer read error so it did failed; also odometer display went out. also getting burning oil smell after 5 minutes of driving

Have the check engine light code checked by a local auto parts store. They usually do it for free. As for the oil smell, it could be the PCV valve or rings/valve seals.
