What is wrong with my windows

My front windows both stopped working at the same time they were down and couldn't go back up I checked the fuses and they were fine and I checked for relays which there wasn't any the only way I could get my windows back up is by putting a live from my battery to the switch on both sides for the car it only has from electric windows I just want to know what it could be before I start thinking about parts
Any help would be great
