This truck runs beautifully up to 35 mph, and at 65+. Between 35 & 65, it runs but it roars. Engine doesn't seem to be straining much, until I get to 65 & it gets much quieter & maybe takes a bit less gas. Told it was transmission, but now someone else says maybe differential. Transmission seems more likely, but its not dependent on rpm. At 64 mph it roars, going uphill/downhill. At 65 mph, it's quiet. Is it likely to be anything other than transmission?

Note if the roaring that you are hearing comes on when the transmission upshifts. Does the noise changes when accelerator pedal is released?

During this time, try shifting to neutral to test if the roar goes away. If yes, problem should be from the transmission and most likely the 3rd speed.
