While driving home it started to over heat, spewed coolant, and started to knock before I got home. Is this a simple fix that I can do my self or should I take it into a mechanic?

It need to be diagnosed correctly first, you may have a stuck thermostat, blocked radiator, broken water pump belt, a coolant leak or a head problem, I would get a mechanic to an inspection first to see what exactly is going on, let me know what they find and I can advise further on that information.
