Hey guys. Every time we take the car out for a long time, we start to hear a clicking/rattling sound from the engine. My dad says the clicking sound starts if the engine is too hot and the only way to stop it is to put the gear in neutral. I'm not really a car geek so I don't really know much. I hope you guys or anyone in the world can at least answer this question and give me some hope. Thanks!

As far as I know, it doesn't overheat. It just makes an annoying rattling sound when the engine is really hot, especially when we take it for long drives.

Engine really hot?

Which is it? Is the engine running hotter than it should be or not?

It sound like you are haring ignition ping. There are a few possible causes for that and overheating is one of them. Other possibilities are ignition timing too far advanced. EGR system not working properly or low octane fuel.

Oh wait, I meant normal hot. Sorry.

I guess the engine heats fast since the weather here is hot. (We're in the Philippines by the way.)

About the timing thing, that's my dad's problem now. He said he retarded the timing to try and fix the rattling sound. He tried advancing the timing but that didn't work either. Its like no matter what you do with the timing, the rattling sound's still there. But he did tell me the car started having rattling sounds when he changed the ATF.

When he went to a shop to change the ATF, the mechanic there said its fine to use an "S3" (I don't know if that's the correct term) ATF, so my dad agreed to have him put it on. A few days later, the car started having the rattling sounds. He called his friend asking why the car started to have rattling sounds and his friend told him that it was because he used an S3 fluid instead of a Dexron III fluid.

Anyways, thanks for trying to help out and cheers from the Philippines!
