After 15-20 minutes of driving in humid 95+ degree F weather, the engine starts to stumble under normal acceleration, but it recovers and begins to smooth out after backing off the gas pedal slightly. Acts like there's too little fuel pressure (or) a clogged fuel filter.

I installed new plugs and an inline fuel filter with no change in performance. A Toyota mechanic with heavy 1.6L experience would likely recognize the cause and solution immediately, but I'm currently out of work and reduced to wrestling with this hair puller on my own.

Would gratefully appreciate your considered opinion as well as any insights, clues and suggestions whatever.

Seems more like misfiring you are describing. Check the plug wires and distributor, possibly the ignition coil is going out.

Many, many thanks KHLow2008, for your kind reply.

I'm going to explore your astute suggestion and see how it goes. A new coil and/or an ignition harness may well be the answer. The cost of both items will likely still be less than the cost of a pro putting my 1.6L on a diagnostic machine.

If your suggestion fixes the problem, I may still have a few $$ left for groceries. Thanks again, pal!
