When I put car into drive or reverse there is a clank like dry mettle hitting dry mettle. When I move there is a banging/grinding sound that seems to last while under 40mph You can feel this banging/grinding in the car not the steering wheel. I took drivers side tire off and see wet and dry grease all around axle where it connects to engine. Passenger side looks fine but wheel has about a 3-4" free spin with the ebrake on and at the end of each turn I can hear what sounds like the noise when I am driving. The noise does not get worse when turning in fact it seems like it goes away. I feel no shimmy in the steering and there is no other noises when the car is in motion and shifting. Looks like to me breaks/front (wheel side) cv and bearings are fine, but I am no mechanic. No horz or vert movement in any of the wheels. All noise seems to be coming from engine side. (No abs breaks- I think its a 2.1 - 4 cil.)

Rasmataz your answer really doesn't help. I have no idea how to check a drive axle. I know from looking this up online - I assume there are 4 rubber boots 2 on each side 1 engine side and 1 wheel side. 3 of the 4 boots look fine and are dry no oil or grease or cracks. The drivers side by the engine has grease both dry and wet all over it and on everything else around it. So I am guessing that's my problem but then what is the problem and about (an educated guess) how much will do you think it will cost to get it fixed I need to know is it like a $300 problem or a $3000 problem and I know it's hard to say with out seeing the car but there has to be a general idea assuming the worst.

One other thing the noise while driving only happens when the gas is pressed if I am costing it seems to go away. But does come back when I step on the gas again. I don't know if that helps

I alway fix the obvious first and see if that cures it. Axle from chain store is under $100 and I dont see why it should cost over $100 to install.
