1995 Toyota Avalon Rear Door Will Open Get Panel Off Seems Automatic Locking

The rear door will not open. I can not get the door panel off. It seems as if the automatic locking part of the inside lock is not connected. There was a whirring sound which has now stopped. How do I get the door open to carry out the repairs?

manually release the latch to open the door.
