hard starting 4runner

95 4runner. truck starts momentarily then dies. if i pump pedal, it starts and revs engine but then dies. the shop said fuel pump. i changed fuel pump and filter but still acts the same. it also sounds like a backfire but in the engine compartment. help!!

Check the fuel pressure to make sure the regulator is working properly. Also, make sure there are no major vacuum leaks and check to see if you are losing spark when it dies.
