My 1995 Subaru Legacy wagon, manual trans, was whining this morning in neutral. Upon hitting the gas pedal, the whining increased in volume. Drove about 2 miles, stopped and she was still whining (in gear and out)and I noticed a plasticky burning smell...all symptoms disappeared after a 15 mile drive, but I'm still worried and not sure if a mechanic will find the problem. Thanks bunches...from a worried full time single mama

Is the noise gone? Are you sure it was from the transmission?

The noise has downgraded, it's not as loud and kind of blends with the engine while I'm driving-can only hear it while idling. and I'm not sure exactly where it was coming from...looked under the hood and definitely was not a belt...and it was coming from under the front side of the motor...

Could it be coming from the alternator or one of the belt driven accessories?
