Rattling 95 Saturn SL1

I have a 95 Saturn SL1. Sometimes when I drive between 20-30 mph the RPM's go up quite a bit (but not into the red) and it wont go down til I hit 40mph (which is a problem when the roads to talk to work are 25-30)
The check engine light has been going on and recently I have started to hear a rattling or popping noise (on the driver side) when I excelerate. But it only happens sometimes. What could this be?

Is it my transmission?

Let's start by what code's do you have?Do you have a delay into reverse or a harsh engagement into reverse?As far as the popping on the drivers side that could be a broken mount or something loose in the suspension.
