1995 Pontiac Grand Am Rear brakes locking up

Brakes problem
1995 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl 150k miles

Rear brakes lock up in drive. Car makes a loud thunk and "drops" immediately when any pressure on brakes is
applied. A mechanic told us to replace all the springs,
we are in the process of doing so, although they all look
very good.....

any fluid leaking? wheel cylinders may be leaky
