will a new thermostat fix my new problem?

the store was closed when i went to get a new thermostat so we punched a few holes in the old one and put it back in. well i drove it and it died repeatedly then sprayed coolant everywhere.

Does your radiator cooling fan work correctly?If you drilled holes in it then now you have to replace the thermostat and go from there.
