1995 Mitsubishi FTO overheating

Hi, so here's a bunch of problems.
Started with high idle when cold (2K rpm), and there is a noise like water bubbling in a drain hole from engine block, but only heard when moving (engine also down on power). A few days and a few thousand miles go by, in which the gears become harder to select when cold. (Double declutching to get 1st and reverse, however no erratic gear movements, nor clutch slipping). (Side note: electrics started to play up in last days, ie. Flash headlights =engine, lights and stereo turned off and back on).
Yesterday, driving around 70mph on motorway, enging overheats, coolant smell in car and windows mist up. I therefore stopped, let the engine cool, checked the coolant level, and filled it to 'full' line (less than 1L needed). Limped the car home with several stops. However the heater wouldn't blow hot air, even with the engine hot.
What do you think the cause could have been? (I have a nice oil pattern now on and around cambelt cover. Oil and coolant levels remain steady).
Looking forward to an answer before I look to rebuild.

Much obliged,

Michael

We dont' have that model in u.S but from your description get battery checked for condition including load test. If you are getting mist inside car check for a leaky heater core, and low coolant is why no heat. Also recommended replacement of timing belt and tensioner is 60,000 milesand it looks like your cam seal may be leaking causing the nice pattern of oil around cover lol. Also depending on whetehr the heater is vacuum or electric controls look for a vacuum leak or an actuator bad they use those for controlling heat/cool. Also it may be a water valve if you have that.
