headlight not working but the side lights and high beams work? if you hit the one headlight it does come one but not the other.

Sounds like you need new bulbs. Hitting them shakes the broken filaments. If the ends touch they will temporarily weld themselves together and work for a little while.

if it's the bulbs why do the brights work? isn't it the same bulb?

may be a poor earth or a faulty connection at the light plug or globe holder.
