The first thing is to check for anything else that isn't working. All electronic radios use two power wires, one is switched on by the ignition switch, and one is always on to maintain the station presets and clock memory. That memory wire is always tied in to some other circuit that is always live. The interior lights are the most common circuit, but the horn or cigarette lighter could be used too.
If the fuse is blown for that memory circuit, there are a variety of possible symptoms depending on the radio model. Some will be totally dead. Some will work normally but once the ignition switch is turned off and back on, the clock will have reset to 12:00 and the station presets will have gone back to the factory defaults. Some radios only lose the time and not the stations.
Some radios will appear to work but only have no sound, like you described. If you don't find anything else in the car not working, there may be an inline fuse for the radio's memory circuit.
