Disconnect the neg battery terminal at the battery. Remove the wires to the starter. Remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place and the starter will come out. Reverse the sequence to replace it.

Note that this is specifically for a 1995 E320.

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Raise front of car and support safely.
3. Remove air box cover. Failing to do this may cause damage when the engine is lifted.
4. Remove bottom splash cover under engine.
5. Remove bottom bolts from left and right engine mounts. One each.
6. Remove top bolt from right hand engine mount. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the job. It is accessed from under the car, using a 16mm box wrench or a flex head ratchet and 16mm socket. If you only have the box wrench it is a slow go but will work. A flex head ratcheting box wrench might be perfect but I didn't have one to try. 5/8" is very close to 16mm if you have that it will work. It might be necessary/helpful to jump to step 8 and take the weight off the engine mount to more easily remove this bolt.
7. Remove the heat shield from the engine mount. It just sits on top of the engine mount bracket and will be loose when you take out the bolt in the previous step.
8. Jack up the engine enough to remove the engine mount. I used a piece of 2x4 between the oil pan and the jack.
9. Remove the 4 bolts holding the engine mount bracket to the engine block and remove the bracket.
10. Remove the battery cable and starter solenoid wire from the starter.
11. Remove the two bolts holding the starter to the bell housing.
12. Remove the starter.
13. Reverse steps to install new starter.

NOTE: It is helpful to install the top right and bottom left and right bolts of the engine mounts loosely to get everything lined up then lower the engine down and tighten them fully. Note that the engine mount has a tab that lines up with a notch in the engine mount bracket. There is only one correct way to install the engine mount.
I recommend using a high-quality replacement starter motor and solenoid. Replacement with an OEM starter can reduce the risk of another replacement later on. https://www.hexautoparts.com/new-starter-for-1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-2003-mercedes-benz-e320-ml320-17757.html

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Here is a link that shows in general how to replace one:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-a-starter-motor

Here are the directions specific to your vehicle. The attached picture correlates with these directions.

Remove Starter, Install

Danger:
- Risk of fatal accident from vehicle slipping or toppling off the lift platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of lifting platform and position the four support plates below the support strong points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery add or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking.
- Wear acid-protective gloves, clothing and eye protection. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

1 Disconnect ground cable of battery

NOTE: Insulate cable lug of ground cable to provide protection from unintentional contact between disconnected ground cable and ground point W10

2 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
3 Disconnect electric cables (1/2)
- Nut of connection circuit 30: 14 N.m
- Nut of connection circuit 50: 6 N.m

4 Remove the right engine mount

Note:
- Remove the screws on the engine mount, lift the engine lightly and put the engine mount on the side.
- The engine mount cannot be removed fully or else the exhaust system will have to be removed.

5 Unscrew screws (3)
- Bolt, starter to crankcase: 42 N.m

6 Take out starter (M1) to the side
7 Install in the reverse order
8 Carry out function check
9 Make electrical system ready for operation
