when changing the front brake pads on a 95 lexus ls 400, does the inside wheel cylinder retract itself for the new pads when the battery is disconnected?

??? The battery has nothing to do with the calipers. Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry the pistons back into the caliper before you remove them. Some people use a c-clamp and block of wood to push the pistons in but if you HAVE to resort to that, the pistons are sticking and will cause trouble. Replace the calipers if that happens.
