Sent my jeep in to rebuild the transmission. I've had to return it to the mech repeatedly and it's still not running right. Before the problem was it would not engage into first, kick out of second and fifth. Returned it again for the 8 th time. Now they fixed the other issues but when the jeep warms up it will not engage into 5 th. What could be the problem. They've already changed the syncs saying they were defective. Could it be my clutch? I'm all out of ideas and thinking instead of restoring it cutting my losses and selling it. I've had her 18 years she's a good touch I don't want to sell but this is frustrating. Thx for any advice you can offer.
Kindest Regards
Emily

This can be a worn or bent shift fork, one of the shift balls or spring not in trans or worn. Unfortunately it sounds like you have got to a bad shop. I'm going to pass this on to a guy here whom is real familiar with jeeps so maybe he can help as well. It just sounds like they didn't do a good job of a rebuild.

I DEAL MORE WITH CJs. HOWEVER, I HAVE MESSED WITH NEWER STUFF A LITTLE

NOT KNOWING MORE ABOUT WHAT YOUR TRANNY IS OR THE ENGINE SIZE

YOU EITHER HAVE A "AX15" COUPLED W/ A 4.0 6 CYL OR YOU HAVE A "AX5" HOOKED TO A 4 CYL, V-6, OR A DIESEL

I COULD MAYBE SEE THE CLUTCH BEING A POSSIBLE FACTOR IF IT IS NOT ADJUSTED OR BLED PROPERLY. IN EZier TERMS, MAYBE YOU DON'T HAVE A "FULL PEDAL". PUSHING IT ONLY MAKES IT MOVE PART OF WHAT IT SHOULD

OF ALL OF THE MOSTLY T-150s, A FEW SR-4s, AND A FEW EARLIER WILLYS TRANNYS, THAT I HAVE REBUILT OR REPLACED PARTS IN, I NEVER REALLY HAD ONE "STUMP ME" AS LONG AS THE LAST ONE.

THE "LAST ONE" WAS MY T-150. SUCH A SIMPLE MACHINE COMPARED TO THE OTHERS

IF I CAN TALK SOME ONE INTO IT (INCLUDING MYSELF) I PREFER TO SORTA JUST "DUMP" EVERYTHING OUT OF THE CASE. SAVE THE CASE, THE OUTPUT GEAR, THE DRAIN PLUG. AND INSTALL EVERYTHING "BRAND NEW" INSIDE, REPLACE THE SHIFT FORKS, AND THE POPPET BALLS AND SPRING (WHICH "INDEX" THE SHIFT SHAFTS INTO THEIR CORRECT POSITIONS)

REBUILDING LIKE THIS "NORMALLY" TAKES AWAY THE "WEAR" POSSIBILITIES OF REUSING THINGS THAT "LOOK OR SEEM" FINE TO REUSE AFTER YEARS OF USE.'CAUSE NOW, YOU BASICALLY HAVE A BRAND NEW TRANNY!

. COST FOR ALL OF THIS. PARTS. THE WHOLE JOB. GEAR OIL AND ALL (MY FREE LABOR). LESS THAN $900

MY '77 CJ 5 IS SO MUCH MORE SIMPLER THAN YOURS!

BUT I PULLED THAT SUCKER OUT EIGHT TIMES, TRYING TO FIGGER OUT WHY 2 TO 3. OR 3 TO 2 WOULD "ALMOST GRIND" AND WOULD NOT JUST GO IN SMOOTH LIKE IT SHOULD

I'M WORKING OFF OF JACK STANDS, AS I DO ALL OF MY/ AND OTHER JEEPS AS A HOBBY. SO I'M ON THE FLOOR DOING ALL OF THIS STUFF.

I USUALLY TALK OTHER FOLKS (HAND PICKED JEEP PEOPLE THAT I ASSIST) THRU THEIR REPAIRS, USING MY TOOLS, I KINDA JUST TAKE ON THE TEACHER ROLE.

. HECK, I LET THEM COME UP WITH THEIR OWN "TIP" FOR ME.I OPERATE THIS WAY, SO THEY CAN LEARN HOW TO FIX THEIR STUFF CORRECTLY AND LEARN SOME TROUBLESHOOTING. I MAKE SOME GOOD FRIENDS THIS WAY.

.I ALSO SORTA STAY "REAL FAMILIAR", AND "ON TOP OP THINGS", WITHOUT BREAKING MY OWN BACK. THEY GET TO SEE WHAT ALL IS INVOLVED IN WHAT THEY MIGHT THINK IS A "EZ REPAIR". THEY ALSO EXPERIENCE THE, "I DID THIS"."IT'S RIGHT".I CAN NOW BRAG!

. SO BACK TO THE EIGHT SNATCHING OUTS ON MINE!

I KNEW I HAD A PROBLEM, I SOUGHT OUT A PRO THAT I KNOW TO HELP ME FIGURE IT OUT, AFTER THE 4TH TIME BACK IN. WE DID THE PRECISE MEASURING AND STUFF, SENT BACK A PART OR TWO. WAITED, REINSTALLED. SAME CRAP!

UPON MY 8TH TIME OUT. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS BRAND NEW AND 4 OR MORE PEOPLE CHECKED IT OUT WITH "MICROMETERS AND DIAL INDICATORS". SURELY THIS WAS A GOOD PART!. WE SENT THE 2ND TO 3RD SYNCHRONISER BACK (I EVEN MARKED THE PIECES WITH LITTLE SCRATCHES.I HAVE SEEN THE SAME PART SENT BACK BEFORE!) THE SUPPLIER INSISTED IT WAS FINE. BUT THEY DID SEND ANOTHER (WHICH DID NOT HAVE MY LITTLE MARKS)

. ALL IS WONDERFUL NOW!
.
.

STUPID QUESTION. WAS THIS A FRANCHISE TYPE SHOP OR A HOLE IN THE WALL KINDA SHOP. OR OTHER SHOP YOU TOOK IT TO?

Hmac300 HIT ON THE HIGH POINTS OF THINGS THAT COULD BE WRONG (YOU MAY HAVE NO CLUE AS TO WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT INSIDE A TRANNY)

YOU MAY "FEEL OBLIGATED" TO STICK WITH THIS SHOP. AS IN MY STORY, THINGS CAN GO WRONG!

MY CONCERNS ARE THAT POSSIBLY THEY HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR KINDA TRANNY, MAYBE ARE ONLY "PARTS SWAPPERS" AND REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE TROUBLE SHOOTING OF INSIDE OF IT

I'VE SEEN PEOPLE WHO HAVE ATTEMPTED TO FIX SOMETHING, REMOVE THE TRANSFER CASE. LET THE BEARING ADAPTER SLIP BACK IN THE TRANNY. INTERNALLY, THE NEEDLE BEARING JUST FELL OUT FROM BETWEEN THE SHAFTS. THEY SHOVED THE ADAPTER BACK INTO PLACE. HAVING NO CLUE THAT THEIR TWO SHAFTS NO LONGER HAVE BEARINGS IN-BETWEEN-XT THEM. THEN WHEN THEY ARE ALL BACK TOGETHER, THEY IMMEDIATELY SENSE A PROBLEM. BUT CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT. RUINING OTHER PARTS!

MORAL OF THAT: IF THEY ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE TRANNY, MAYBE IT'S NOT ASSEMBLED RIGHT.

I ONCE WAS CALLED UPON TO CHECK OUT A PROBLEM.A LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM. IT WAS DONE BY IDIOTS WHO HAD NO CLUE AS TO WHAT THEY WERE DOING.I IDENTIFIED OVER 30 MAJOR ISSUES.I GAVE MY PRICE TO MAKE IT ALL RIGHT (WHICH WOULDA REQUIRED SOME SERIOUS UNDOING).I SAW THE OWNER A MONTH LATER, . HE SAID HE HAD THE FIRST BUNCH, WHO MESSED IT ALL UP, TO COME BACK AND FIX IT ALL CORRECTLY

. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING THE 1ST TIME, HOW CAN YOU SUDDENLY LEARN HOW TO DO IT (WHICH TAKES YEARS OF LEARNING/ EXPERIENCE) IN A MONTHS TIME. AND BETTER YET, THE FELLER SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE TO ANY DEMOLITION TO DO IT RIGHT.I NEVER GOT TO GO SEE THE 2ND MESS!

DO YOU KNOW IF THESE GUYS ARE DOING THESE REPAIRS "TRIAL AND ERROR" OR ARE THEY USING A JEEP/ TRANNY REFERENCE (A BOOK. ETC)?

HOW FLOPPY IS YOUR STICK?

ON SOME LATER CJs, W/ SOME SHIFTING ISSUES THE (IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY) THE ISOLATOR AND IT'S BUDDIES (THE OTHER END OF THE STICK) WERE WORN OUT/ BROKEN AND WOULD NOT LET IT SHIFT RIGHT

AS YOU CAN SEE.I JUMP AROUND AND AM NOT REAL ORGANIZED!

HOW DID YOU FIND THIS SHOP?

ARE THEY "TOLERABLE" OR ARE THEY NOT REAL HAPPY AT THE MOMENT?

THINK THEY MIGHT "BARTER" IF YOU WANNA GO ELSEWHERE?

MAYBE I CAN HELP YOU FIND ANOTHER REPUTABLE/ DECENT/ SHOP. MAYBE NOT THE "STEALERSHIP"

LASTLY. YOU WILL REGRET IT FOREVER, IF YOU ABANDON YOUR JEEP. WORSE THAN THAN LEAVING YOUR DOG AT THE SHELTER

YOUR TURN. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO REALLY SPILL YOUR GUTS. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE IS A LOT OF ROOM IN THESE BOXES

THE MEDIC

THESE ARE PICS I MADE FOR A T150 AND MY 2 JEEPS. THIS IS BY NO MEANS THE WAY YOUR TRANNY LOOKS
