i have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 v8. it is in awd. i tried to move it into neutral for 2wd and it wont move and makes a very bad grinding noise. i am wondering what it could be and if its expensive to fix ? also is it harming my transmission being driven this way ?

have you tried to switch it with the engine off? try to back up 20 feet then stop and try it.and yes it is haed on everything.
