2.3 liter with carb. Starts and runs 3 seconds then shuts off. New battery low on water. Heard about charge relay; removed and starts fine. Replaced with new relay and same issue. Possible voltage regulator causing battery water boil-out or alternator/generator? Also heard to disconnect neg. battery lead while running to see if continues to run by generator only- have not tried yet. Not an experienced mechanic with test equip. but can change out parts if problem identified. Thanks for any help.

Not digital, have Sperry analog multitester. Check what with it? Took out EFE relay, no difference in or out. Runs great without charge relay and only 3 seconds or less with it in.

Went by Autozone and they tested. Machine showed good battery, starter, bad voltage regulator and good diodes in alternator. Would this cause charge relay to act as it does or is something else lurking? Will go ahead and change out voltage reg which is part of alternator. Thanks for your followup.

I presume you mean alternator and regulator do not work with relay out. Took out alternator, failed all 3 tests at Autozone. Installed new one and runs like normal with no issues. Spent $ 18 on a new charge relay that was probably unnecessary but is not a bad thing in the long run.
