why does my car backfire?

V8 commodore vs starts with a whinning idle, then afta 15 - 20secs it idles like a V8 properly.
Drive down the road then it backfires with 1 big loud bang &
then wont start.
Replaced spark plugs, filters, leads, checked fuel pump, carbuerator cap seems fine, soundds like the timinghs out.
