why does my car backfire?

V8 commodore vs starts with a whinning idle, then afta 15 - 20secs it idles like a V8 properly.
Drive down the road then it backfires with 1 big loud bang &
then wont start.
Changed spark plugs, check exhaust pipe, replaced new leads, carbuerator cap seems fine, changed filters

sticky valves may be a problem, is it backfiring in the exhaust or the inlet, how many Km's and have you had a scan for any unresolved electrical problem yet?
