How do I know if a torque converter is failing?

What are the signs that a converter is going out? How do I replace it?

When the torque converter starts to fail, you may feel shuddering (shaking) and even slipping, especially when it shifts to overdrive. Also, you will likely feel the shudder at slower speeds.

As far as the torque converter replacement, the transmission needs to be removed. The torque converter is bolted to the flywheel on the rear of the engine, between the engine and transmission.

If you plan to replace the converter, here is a link that you may find helpful. It explains in general how to remove the transmission. You can use this as a guide because the manual's directions are somewhat vague.
