1995 Ford Ranger Selector won't go into Park

The gear selector on my 95 Ranger will not go into park. The transmission shifts fine, but I cannot push the selctor rod high enough. I moved the linkage on the transmission and all if free. I noticed a cable leading from the transmission to the steering column. Does it need adj or replacing? How difficult?

Did you repair? Sounds like the cable is problem.
