I had not used the car since yesterday afternoon & I went to drive it today & when I put it in reverse I could
not turn the steering wheel without using all my strength. I then tried to go forward & I could not turn the steering wheel. What can this be? Could running
out of steering fluid cause this?
Thanks,

I just bought a contour svt 1998. There is a loud wining noise from under the engine. The man said its just the power steering pump going bad, how can I be sure? I Dont even know where it is located. I searched everywhere online and can't find any information about the power steering pump on this car. I would just like to know where it is so I can rest easy if the sound is actually coming from the pump instead of something more sever. Please help me.

Take a look at this page:

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/ford/contour/1998

Locate the pic that is the same as your vehicle and you will see where the pump is located. Also, a pump will usually get louder whey you try to turn the wheels. Make sure the PS fluid is clean and full, too.

The guy at Meineke checked and said my power steering fluid was fine and the pump tested ok. He said the problem was with the Rack and Pinion.

I asked how much somthing like that costs to replace and he told me close to $1000.00 dollars. He said there is a plastic gear in there that probably has broke and eventually I wont be able to turn the wheels at all. Also, that the whole thing has to be replaced.

I looked online and I see Rack and Pinions selling for $150.00 Is this not the right type? Is the $1000.00 estimate accurate?

I am a college student and don't have all the funds in the world. I would really love one of you guys to help me out. Thanks so much!

price for OEM dealer part steering rack $200.00
5 hours labor @ $50 p/h $250.00

of course your shop may charge different labor p/h and this is a dealer part price, you can probably get this cheaper ??

How much pressure should the power steering pump have on a 96 Ford Contour? If I unhook the sensor, should the fluid squirt out a foot or 2 or should it be very high pressure?
