i let the car warm up for at least 15/20 min. and the heater blows cold until i start driving and the temp gauge is showing that the car is about to overheat when it idles but goes back down when i drive. could it be the heather core?

You may have a restricted heater core or air pockets in the system. I would try flushing out the heater core with a garden hose under pressure.
