My 1995 Dodge Intrepid is hard to crank sometimes. The starter turns fine. It acts like it is not firing. When it does crank the motor just cuts off while driving at no particular time. It may go 10 miles or 1 mile. Then it usually does not restart right away it but after trying for a while it will start and repeat the same again of maybe not. In the past I have replaced both the crankshaft and the camshaft sensors for similar problem but do not know which one to try first. Would rather not replace both of them if not necessary. Can you help?

Cam sensor is more common and is easier to replace. Have you checked for fault codes?

The easiest is to have the guys at the auto parts stores read them for free. You can also do it yourself by watching the Check Engine light. Chrysler makes it real easy. Cycle the ignition switch from "off" to "run" three times within five seconds, then count the flashes of the light. Typically you will see one flash, a short pause, two flashes, then a longer pause before the next two-digit code starts. That's code 12 which can be disregarded. It's the next codes you're interested in. The last one will be 55 which just means "end of message".

If you go too far and the engine cranks, even for a fraction of a second, it will abort the test sequence. If that happens, just turn the switch off for about five seconds, then start over. If you think you miscounted or just want to run the numbers again, you can do that on most models by just turning the ignition switch off and back on once.
