Pull shifter out and look down into trans it shold look like a square or rectangle where the shifter rests take a large screwdriver sn dsee if you can make it look like that then reinstall shifter with a couple of bolts and see if it shifts ok if it does then finish reinstall if not the trans has to come out

All I said as to pull shifter out not the trans well now that you have it out see if it has the square or rectangle at shifter box like I said it may be jammed between gears. If not then it's a syhncro bad or locked up or a shift rod so it would have to come apart to fix that.

Ok I cant get the trans off the bellhousing. The housing for stick that is on the shift rod is blocking the way to slide it apart. This is a nv3500 right? I cant find any instructions on how to disassemble. Do I need to get rig pliers and take off the lock ring?

Get a manual and you will need snap ring pliers to remove or tear the trans apart. You also have to remove the shift rod detent on side of case to pull it apart.
