Will only shift into 3rd or 4th gear

My 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier has a manual transmission that will only shift into 3rd or 4th gear. What is wrong and how do I fix it? The shifter is very wobbly and when in 3rd or 4th it can move all the way from side to side where 1st and 5th or 2nd and reverse would be engaged.

Your shifter may be worn out and not moivng the cables or the cable may be bad that moves th position in the transmission. Have a pro look at this or you can yourself if you want to tear it apart. But look at cables wheil someone shifts for you with engine stopped.
