is the "coolant temperature sending unit" and the "coolent temperature sensor" the same thing?

well one is for the gauge and the other is for the computer. they work a little differently. the sensor is for the computer the sending unit is for the gauge

So is the the sensor the wiring that goes into the sending unit or is it a totally different part
