Starter Replacement Instructions

Here is a guide and some diagrams to show you how to get the job done, you will need to jack the car up first.

NOTE:On the 4.9L engine, the starter assembly is externally mounted and located on the right side of engine block.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. As required, remove nuts from A/C compressor, exhaust system and/or engine braces, adjacent to starter. On M/T models, remove bending brace from around starter (if equipped). On all models, remove other items that may interfere with removal of starter.

If necessary, remove nut from engine cross brace. Using pry bar between upper engine mount and engine, pry rearward and support engine.

If necessary, remove oil filter, air induction tube and cooling fan. Remove flywheel inspection cover (if equipped). Remove starter solenoid terminal "S" nut and battery cable nut. Separate wiring from starter. Remove starter mounting bolts and any shims. Remove starter.

All wires that have a large eyelet go one the top lug, the one other wire with the small eyelet goes on the small lug with the nut on it (closest to the engine block).

Sorry about the trouble, pictures really help in these situations. Anyway it sounds like you burned up the fusible links which will need to be replaced.

I don't have a picture but here is the starter wiring diagram. You can see there are only two style of wires large eyelet and small. Please send me a picture of your hook up before you attach the battery cable.

I have drawn a blue arrow please tell me where this wire goes, and check any that go directly to ground. The yellow connector looks like the small trigger wire which is the only wire going to the small terminal on the solenoid. The rest go to the large lug but before connecting the blue arrow let me know.

Always connect the battery slowly by just touching it then letting off should only be a small spark.

The one with the arrow is a ground cable and cannot be connected to the starter is should go to the engine block close to the starter.

Check to make sure the starter and flywheel are meshing properly. Also, if you are getting a click or anything when it stops.

Check the flywheel and starter gears for damage or uneven wear. It could be putting too much of a strain on the starter. If you are getting remanufacturered starters, they could be bad. Also, when it doesn't start, try this. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage at the smaller wire on the starter. You should have 12 volts. If you do, the starter is bad. If there isn't 12 volts, check wiring, grounds, starter relay.
